Club Programme |
As an experiment for the forthcoming season (September 25th through to January 8th), tickets for all Thursday night guest artists at the Black Swan Inn are now available to book on line.
Go to www.wegottickets.com and search under venue “York Black Swan” and you will find a list of forthcoming events.
Note that there are separate entries for Full Price and for Concessions for each event.
They charge you a simple 10% commission on the face value of your tickets and send you a booking reference rather than physically posting a ticket, meaning you can book until 6pm on the day of performance.
Please note that this new scheme only applies to club guest nights. Early Music Centre concert tickets will continue to be handled by the NCEM Box Office (with a few available for sale through the club as well), while Singers Nights will continue to be “pay-on-the-door” only events.

Rachel Unthank & The Winterset |
NCEM |
A welcome return to NCEM for this most distinctive of modern folk groups. Latest CD The Bairns had fulsome reviews and numerous “best of the year” listings, took the BBC Folk Awards Horizon trophy and is now nominated for the Nationwide Mercury Prize. Proud of their Northumbrian roots, Rachel and Becky sing in lilting Geordie accents, accompanied by Niopha on fiddle and Stef (a York University PhD student) on grand piano. They use elements of blues, jazz, burlesque, classical and leftfield contemporary music to make folk which is peerless, fearless and utterly unique.

| We cannot speak too highly of this Scots Canadian singer after his superb debut visit in 2004. His songs are finely-crafted poetic gems, short but subtle and perceptive observations on ordinary people, places and events. No wonder he has now won three JUNOs, Canada’s premier music awards. He is accompanied this time by ace guitarist Craig Werth. |

Scotland is a hotbed for female singers these days. Emily Smith is coming up fast in that league, as we witnessed with her impressive NCEM debut in 2005. The recently released, glowingly reviewed third CD, Too Long Away, again showcases her exquisite voice and blends assured self-penned songs with an inspired selection of traditional ballads and Burns covers. A gifted pianist and accordionist, she is joined by Jamie McClennan on fiddle, Ross Milligan on guitar and Kevin McGuire on bass Support TBA Tickets £12 (Concs £10) |

| Hard to believe, but Maggie Boyle, Lynda Hardcastle and Helen Hockenhull are now in their 16th year together. Their highly praised harmonies and thoughtful repertoire have made them one of the folk scene's best loved female groups, including here in York. Their three-part harmony arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs, both acapella and accompanied, will give us lovely start to 2009. |
