E-Newsletter 108

October Newsflash 2009

A quick update on two items from last week’s full newsletter, plus news which reached me too late for inclusion last time of no fewer than three interesting gigs on 24th October.

  1. EXTRA SHOW FOR DICK GAUGHAN. Dick’s Thursday night performance on 10th December is now Sold Out. Rather than see a lot of disappointed customers, I have decided to take a modest gamble and have engaged Dick for an Extra Show on the preceding Tuesday, 8th December, also at the Black Swan.
We did this Two Night booking once before for Dick Gaughan (back in 1997!) and we have also done it a couple of times for Martin Carthy. I uploaded the ticketing details to www.wegottickets.com this evening and they should be available for purchase by Monday. Prices are the same as for the Thursday show: £ 10 full and £ 8 concessions.
If you have already purchased tickets for Thursday but would prefer to attend on Tuesday, please get in touch and I’ll see if we can arrange a swap. Likewise, if you haven’t yet booked and can only manage Thursday, let me know and I’ll see if any openings appear.

  2. PLENTY OF TICKETS LEFT FOR JACKIE OATES. By contrast, sales for Jackie Oates’ concert with her band at NCEM this coming Monday have remained disappointingly low, and there will be no difficulty at all in just buying at the door on the night, should you feel moved to come along (which of course I hope you do, in droves!). The show begins at 7.30 with half an hour from Katriona Gilmore & Jamie Roberts and the price is £ 13 (£ 11 concessions).

  3. SPOILT FOR CHOICE ON SATURDAY 24th OCTOBER. Here in York, the function room at the Black Swan Inn has an acoustic “Three-in-the-Round” gig on Saturday next. York favourites Holly Taymar and David Ward Maclean are joined by Scarborough-based singer / songwriter Joe Solo. The event begins around 8pm and costs £ 5 on the door. Joe Solo made a favourable impression at one of our club Singers Nights earlier this year and he will be back in York on 30th November to support Chris Wood’s Handmade Life at the Early Music Centre.
North and eastwards of York, one of America’s finest acoustic fingerstyle guitarists has a one off gig in Malton on 24th October. Duck Baker is at Suddaby’s on Wheelgate, beginning around 8pm. Well known to Black Swan audiences (he was last with us in 2006) Duck is a wonderfully skilled and eclectic player – his repertoire spans jazz in all its forms, as well as blues, Appalachian folk and Celtic music. Tickets are £ 7.50 in advance on 0790 551 7569, or £ 10 on the door.
Still with 24th October but south and westwards of York another favourite of ours, Roger Davies, headlines at the St Mary’s Social Club on Melton Street in Batley (WF17 8PT for Sat Nav users). This one has music from 8.30pm and entry is just £ 3. Ring Denis on 01924 503758 if you need any further information.

I still hope to be back very early in November with a full length newsletter.
